Learning to Build Mashups

Mashups currently have something of a reputation of requiring extremely advanced programming skill and esoteric knowledge. We are investigating ways to make the process of mashup building much more accessible. As part of this effort we have taught mashup creation to a group of undergraduates taking a class in the UIUC GSLIS Information Technology Studies Minor. Students in the class typically had relatively limited programming experience and yet were able to create innovative and working mashups. By giving them examples and code templates thy were able to learn by editing code rather than writing from scratch. While certainly not state of the art mashups, they show the potential of this approach.

Here we show some examples of what they produced, and the instructional materials and resources they were provided with.
