Building Mash-ups for Non-Programmers

From MashWorks

Jump to: navigation, search

This is a page that has some info about tools which allow non-programmers to create mash-ups, as well as some non-programmers who have created their own mash-ups via combining services in other ways. Note, that while I am referring to them as non-programmers, some of the examples of mash-ups may include examples that were actually created by programmers (I don't know most of the people whose work I'm referencing). However, what I mean, is that they could easily have been created by non-programmers.

[edit] Services Geared for Non-Programmers to Build Mash-ups

So far, they're all map related. Note, these may be more or less geared for non-programmers. I make no claims as to the usability of these sites, only, that they don't require programming skills.

[edit] Map Related Services

Some of them are still a little buggy, but, by and large, they're pretty impressive. I've tried them all out, but not in any depth, so feel free to improve upon my brief reviews.

http://www.mapbuilder.net/

  • Mostly useful for collecting pins on sites
  • A little bit buggy

  • Many features, including pins, tags, routes, etc.
  • Focus on usability, wizard to get started
    • Can be a little annoying.

This site may be broken. It looks like an old prototype for a service that may have (had) functionality similar to the sites above:

One user comment proposes a name:

You inspired me. I propose the tag of "memorymap" for this proto-meme.

Another has a prescient wish:

I wish Google Maps had an api, so that someone could build an annotation/wiki service for people to share stories on.

Here's a link to a group another user created for similar mashups, there are a number of examples here:
